Accidental spills happen and the first thing that comes to mind is “how is it going to come out?”. When a spill happens, you want to clean it promptly. Different kinds of spills such as juice, wine, sauce, coffee, make up, oils/fats or even mud can leave behind some big stains.

Here are some tips on how to deal with a spill:

Blot, don’t rub:

Blotting the spill with a white cloth will do the trick. Using a colored cloth, towel or shirt may lead to the transfer of those colors onto the carpet, upholstery, area rugs or mat. With blotting, you are absorbing the spill instead of rubbing or scrubbing it. Rubbing/scrubbing can make the spill spread.

Use a solution:

Mix a solution that consists of, a tablespoon of liquid dish soap, a tablespoon of white vinegar, and two cups of warm water. Mix well and try to foam it up. Use a new clean white cloth (not the one you blotted with) to apply the solution to the spill. Blot with a dry cloth till the spill is no longer visible or has stopped transferring to the cloth. Blot until the spill is as dry as possible.

Let it dry:

After blotting the spill with the suggested mixture, fold a white cloth in quarters. Place the cloth on top of the spill and weigh it down with some heavy books. This will allow for more of the spill to dry by wicking up into the cloth. Every few hours place a dry quarter of the cloth over the spill and continue weighing it down with the books until dry.

Call a carpet cleaning professional:
